The Grauniad reports that Germany is backing a
€400bn renewables network designed to provide 15% of Europe's electricity by 2050, with Morocco chosen as the first venue for solar energy farms.
The Grauniad then goes on to say
Discussions are already underway with the Tunisian government about building a solar farm ...and Algeria is the next "obvious" country, due to its close proximity to western Europe's grid. Countries such as Libya, Egypt, Turkey, Syria and Saudi Arabia are predicted to start joining the network from 2020.

Many years ago Arthur C. Clarke predicted that solar power would be beamed down from satellites to microwave 'farms' in the Saudi desert, thus allowing the sheikhs to maintain their energy cartel. I think he was joking, but perhaps the Germans had a sense of humour failure.
